In a healthy functioning digestive system, there is a natural porosity in the mucosal lining that allows nutrients to pass through for absorption and nutrition and keeps that bacteria and toxins within the GI tract to be eliminated through the bowels. Leaky Gut Syndrome is a condition in which the porosity of the intestines increases allowing nutrients plus the bacteria and proteins to pass through the mucosal lining into the blood stream. The immune system sets off a red flag that there is a toxin/protein circulating in the blood and sets off an autoimmune response. Hence the beginning of a food allergy.
For years I have relied on what the doctors have told me in order to restore my health. Nothing EVER worked. I tried everything. Turns out that I actually know more about my own body, how it functions, and how it’s supposed to feel from day to day in order to live optimally and be healthy.
I’ve literally spent thousands of dollars over the years trying to heal my body. The years of chronic stress ultimately wore me down ….. and it all began in my digestive system. We often think that we can pop a quick supplement to ease our way out of physical discomfort. And that’s ok now and again. But if it’s a chronic ongoing issue, you absolutely must address what is going on. Stress, regardless of where it comes from, ultimately will show up for you in your digestive system. After all, that’s where our health begins and ends.
Leaky Gut or any condition that compromises the integrity of the digestive system comes from stress, too much sugar. and not enough healthy [saturated] fats and beneficial bacteria. Having a healthy flora environment in the intestines is critical for maintenance of your immune system. However, if you are popping probiotics and not seeing a difference within the first couple of the weeks, chances are that you are not absorbing those probiotics. You need to heal the mucosal lining of the gut so that what needs to pass through can pass, what needs to stay, stays, and so that good bacteria can grow and thrive.
If you want to take the supplemental route, that’s fine. Taking loads of glutamine powder and popping billions and billions of strains of bacteria might work for you. Another therapeutic way would be to go back to our ancestral way of healing and make some good old bone broth. When your mom said soup is good for the soul, she wasn’t lying. In fact, it may have been the best nutritional tip you ever got from her.
Bone broth has more health benefits than any other food I know of. It is so healing and medicinal and costs a fraction of what you pay for your supplements. And it takes very little time to make.
Bone broth is known to “heal & seal” the lining of the gut allowing for more thorough digestion, assimilation, and elimination of nutrients and waste.
Gelatin is a hydrophilic colloid which attracts and holds liquid, specifically digestive juices, supporting proper digestion.
Inhibits Infection by enhancing your immune system. Bone broth fights of colds, flus, and viruses.
Reduces joint pain & inflammation. The properties of collagen, chondroitin sulphates, glucosamine, and other compounds extracted from the mineral rich bone and cartilage help reduce and inflammation allowing for easier range of motion, physical activity, and pain free living.
Fights systemic inflammation. But it especially fights inflammation in the gut where it begins. The amino acids glycine, proline, and arginine have anti-inflammatory properties. Arginine is particularly helpful for system inflammation. Glycine is very “calming” which may help you sleep better. Try a mug of bone broth before bed instead of your usual chamomile tea.
Promotes strong and healthy bones. Broth is loaded with “natural” calcium, magnesium, and other minerals and nutrients that help in bone formation.
Promotes healthy skin, hair, and nails thanks to the gelatin it creates.
Bone broth is so easy to make and so inexpensive. All you need to make a basic broth are:
· 2-4 pounds of grass-fed organic beef bones…..(the femur with the marrow, the knuckles, and the joints all work) I general will use the femur with the marrow and use the marrow for cooking.
· Purified Water
· Sea Salt
· 2 tbsp whole peppercorns
· 1 tbsp Apple Cider Vinegar (optional)
Place your bones on the bottom of your crockpot and fill with water leaving about an inch on top. Add your sea salt, pepper corns, and ACV. Set it an forget it. Allow your broth to cook on low for no less than 12 hours and no more than 36 hours. I do 24 and get a really nice dark broth. The darker the broth, the more minerals have been extracted.
Allow your broth to cool for a few hours and then pull out the bones and marrow. Strain your broth through a cheese cloth or small mesh strainer and store in 32 ounce mason jars. Refrigerate the jars. A thick layer of fat will rise to the top and harden. This is called tallow and is an excellent saturated fat to cook with and so medicinal as well. Break the fat off and store in a separate container. After your broth cools completely, it will form a nice thick gel (gelatin). The thicker the gel, the more medicinal it is.
You can store your broth in the refrigerator for 7-10 days. Anything longer than that store in the freezer (after it’s initially cooled). You can use this broth as a base to make other soups as well. I often will make chicken soup with it or just heat and drink it from a mug on an empty stomach. It’s delicious and really does have a calming effect, which I know means is helping the healing process.
Anytime you can take your health into your own hands, the end result will be long term ongoing health. Healing the digestive system is the very first step. Bone broth is the one food that has the properties to heal on a cellular level. When you get your digestive system healed and functioning properly, you will start to see your health on all levels take off.
To Your Health!!
