- Do you even feel better with all the products you are taking? Have you bothered to do an assessment before, during, and after you started your supplement regime to have a scale to base your results on? Most of us don't. We just do our research and when Dr. Google says take this to mitigate that or pop that to increase that.....we blindly reach into our wallets for our credit cards and let the multi trillion dollar supplement industry devour our savings. Meanwhile, most of us have little to show for the amount of money we are spending on supplements.
- Do you bother to research the companies you're getting your products from? Randomly getting products from a health food store because some "professional" with a name tag on his/her shirt says that "studies show"..........well, you're blindly putting your health into the hands of someone who doesn't have the education and true experience to be recommending such products. Truly all they're supposed to be doing is pointing you in the direction of said product you're looking for......Buyer Beware!!
- Do you actually even have the condition you are trying to treat? Do you have leaky gut syndrome? Do you have Candida? Do you have parasites? Do you really need to be taking a thyroid support formula (oh boy this is a huge thing these days)? Before you go and start taking "all natural supplements"---especially if you're dealing with glandulars, you best get checked out by an endocrinologist, or a doctor that is trained in the area of the body that you are trying to "fix"......you could be causing a whole world of hurt otherwise....trust me on that one....been there....paid for it dearly.
- Have you considered other options besides what you're adding in? What about what you should be taking out? Such as processed foods, excessive consumption of sugar, alcohol, and cigarettes? What about the lack of sleep you're getting? What about the lack of exercise? Could you be getting too much exercise? Are you drinking enough water? Are you getting enough sunshine or are you glued to your computer in doors all day long? Are you happy in your relationships? Before you start supplementing for lack of energy consider whether or not your energy slump may be due to poor dietary and lifestyle habits, depression, or a deficiency in a nutrient that you could be adding to your program by eating more fresh fruits and vegetables. Consider your social arena. We are the company we keep.
In this day and age, more of us are self diagnosing and medicating ourselves. There could be a huge price to pay for that. Although we may be the ones who know our bodies the best, that doesn't qualify us as medical professionals, whether it be conventional or holistic. When it comes to supplements or medications, all natural can be just as damaging as the non natural versions.
This is not to say that there aren't some extremely valuable supplements/medicines out there. Extreme athletes perhaps need some cutting edge products. But even they need to cycle their products as most supplements should not be taken on an ongoing basis unless closely supervised by a well qualified and trained professional.
This past April I was hospitalized with erosive esophagitis. For those of you who do not know what that is, it's an extremely painful inflammatory condition in the esophagus. Mine was brought on by a rupture due to taking hydrochloric acid which happened to be recommended by a naturopathic doctor for my Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. Even at such a low dose, it had the power to do such extensive damage as to take down my esophagus.
Don't let stuff like this happen to you. Don't blindly pop pills and turn a cheek to the possible side effects. It's not worth it. Follow a sound diet and lifestyle plan. Exercise daily. Get plenty of rest and sunshine. Surround yourself with those who make you smile and who lend you a shoulder when you need to shed a tear. Don't get caught up in the latest and greatest schemes out there. Most of them don't hold out in the long run. The truth is that you've got to move your body, eat healthy, and treat yourself well. Cleanse at times that are appropriate for your body. Cleansing is an important part of keeping your body in tip top shape......after all, you wouldn't drive your car the entire time you have it without getting an oil change or tune up.....so don't stretch your body to those extremes either.
Take a long hard look at your supplement cabinet. Really look into whether or not you need those products or just think you need them. Often times what we really need is solid nutrition. It's what our bodies were designed to break down and assimilate. Why complicate a system that is already complex enough.
What supplements and products are you taking? Why are you taking them? And do you honestly feel a difference on them?
